Dear Reader,

The HPN celebrated its 10th anniversary in fine style in Louisville, Kentucky, September 22-25. Between the Louisville Slugger factory and Churchill Downs, site of the Kentucky Derby, the Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau hit a grand slam and won going away with HPN attendees.

If you're seeking Southern hospitality, up-to-date facilities, historic hotels, and a town that knows how to throw a party, Louisville is the place for your organization's next meeting.

In this issue of HPN E-News (our second), we focus on the Louisville meeting and how thought-provoking presentations, intense teamwork, and networking galore combined for another successful moment in HPN history.

    Best regards,
    HPN Coordinating Team

PS Thanks to all who responded with feedback on our initial issue, and congratulations to Kristen Mahoney Shannon, MS, CGC, Senior Genetic Counselor, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, and HPN representative from the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Kristen was randomly selected to receive a complimentary copy of the Health Professions Career and Education Directory, published by the American Medical Association.

1. Wide array of speakers enlighten, educate HPN attendees

The focus for the fall HPN meeting in Louisville was "New Initiatives in Allied Health." The speakers began with Richard Lewis discussing "Organizational Behavior Meets Gen X and Y: A practical approach for recruiting students and workers." Mr. Lewis explained how traditional recruitment and retention techniques may not be effective for today's students.

Attendees enjoyed more excellent presentations with:

  • Pat Munzer, "Are we Graduating Enough Health Care Providers to Meet Current and Future Needs?"
  • Hazel Hacker, "Employee/Student Retention: Got Them? Keep Them"
  • Ann Peton, "How GIS Mapping Can Support Allied Health Professionals".

Speaker handouts are available on the HPN Web site.

2. HRSA and DOL focus on allied health

Gina King of the Department of Labor and Young Song, Department of Health Resources and Services Administration, joined to present a panel discussion on "Federal Initiatives Regarding Health Care Workforce Development" at the fall HPN meeting.

Ms. Song discussed upcoming allied health grant opportunities and the difficulties of defining who is considered allied health on the federal level. Ms. King summarized several DOL initiatives to increase the allied health workforce, including grant programs and the Career Voyages Web site.

HPN will continue discussions with these federal leaders to discover more ways we can work together to increase awareness of allied health. Learn more about HRSA's allied health projects.

3. Looking back, moving ahead: HPN history now available online

"Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it," the saying goes. No chance of that for the HPN, however, which has chronicled its many achievements over the last 10 years in "The HPN History: A Decade of Accomplishments."

Starting with the initial meeting in 1995, and continuing through the 2005 strategic planning blueprint for the future, this document describes the successes, struggles, and environmental change surrounding the organization, and allied health, over the past 10 years.

4. HPN Teams advance allied health agenda

The work of the HPN continues way beyond the close of the biannual meetings. HPN attendees commit to continuing teamwork to advance the initiatives set at the meetings.

The Advocacy Team, for example, will develop a grassroots network to promote the Allied Health Reinvestment Act in Jan-Mar 2006; the Consumer Marketing Team will be adding several missing allied health professions to the NIH and DOL websites; and the Coordinating Team is considering a national campaign to promote allied health careers and educate consumers.

All team reports are available on the HPN Web site for your review.
Feel free to join a team; your contributions are greatly needed!

5. Music therapy is the Allied Health Profession of the Month

Now featured on the HPN's Web site is the profession of Music Therapy.

Past professions of the month include Nurse Aide Instructors, Genetic Counseling, Certified Surgical Assistants, and Registered Dietitian.
